According to statistics, every fifth married couple cannot have children. And in almost half of these cases, doctors cannot determine the reason why natural conception does not occur. In this situation, intrauterine insemination will be the best option for conceiving a child.
What is this
Intrauterine insemination is artificial insemination, which consists in the introduction of processed and purified sperm into the uterine cavity. This procedure is performed during ovulation.

Intrauterine insemination is divided into 2 types. Which one will suit this or that couple will become known only after the spermogram of the spouse. If the result of this analysis shows that the number of viable spermatozoa is low, then intrauterine insemination with the husband's sperm is used. It is also performed if the spouse does not ejaculate or has impotence.
If the result of the analysis showed that the husband has genetic problems or nospermatozoa, intrauterine insemination is performed with donor sperm.
Steps of insemination
- At the first stage, the preparation of the woman's body is carried out - ultrasound monitoring is performed, which shows the process of growth of follicles and the maturation of the egg by stimulating the ovaries with medications that in one way or another affect their function.
- Next, the prepared and cleaned sperm is introduced into the uterus.
Also, intrauterine insemination can be performed in a natural cycle, i.e. without the process of stimulating ovarian maturation, but then the probability of successful fertilization decreases significantly.
This procedure takes only 2-3 minutes and is absolutely painless. Since it is performed using a special catheter, the diameter of which moves freely along the cervical canal. After insemination, the woman should lie down for at least 30 minutes.
Pros of insemination
- Ovulation control ensures that the egg and sperm meet at the best possible time for fertilization.
- During sexual intercourse, the main part of the spermatozoa lingers and dies in the cervical mucus. Intrauterine insemination simply avoids this.
- Before introducing sperm into the cervical canal, it is processed, and this improves its quality and, accordingly, increases the chances of pregnancy.
Contraindications
- Pathologies in the development of the uterus, which can disrupt the normal bearing of pregnancy.
- Mental illness of a woman, in which pregnancy is contraindicated.
- Inflammatory disease or pelvic cancer.
- Ovarian tumor.
As a rule, after 3-4 failed insemination attempts, doctors suggest in vitro fertilization. The thing is that in almost 90% of cases, pregnancy should occur in the first 3 attempts. Since with each subsequent insemination, the probability of pregnancy is reduced to almost zero.
