Facial hyperemia is an involuntary temporary reddening of the skin on the face, resulting from the expansion of blood vessels. In most cases, hyperemia is the body's natural response to some kind of influence (for example, exercise, high air temperature, consumption of spicy food or alcohol). Other causes of facial redness are:
-
Various emotional states such as excitement, sexual arousal, embarrassment, anger. These emotions increase the heart rate, thereby increasing blood flow to the brain.
- Exposure to cold. Frost or strong winds cause the body to try to regulate the temperature so that the internal organs remain warm. This can cause the face to turn ruddy.
- High blood pressure and hypertension. Clogged or narrowed blood vessels cannot pump blood to their full potential. The heart works hard, resulting in a rush of blood to the face.
- Hormonal changes. During pregnancy and menopause, which is often accompanied by hot flashes, there is an increase in blood flow.
Facial flushing also occurs when the body overheats (such as fever, heat exhaustion, or heat stroke). In addition, it can be caused by allergic reactions and inflammatory conditions. With such
states often there is redness of the eyes. Rarely, redness can cause carcinoid syndrome, a condition in which a tumor produces hormones that lead to vascular changes.
Overflow of blood vessels can be active and passive. In the first case, arterial hyperemia occurs when the blood flows faster than usual, which leads to an increase in hyperemic tissue in volume and an increase in its temperature. In the second case, venous hyperemia occurs, characterized by difficulty in the outflow of blood and its stagnation in the veins.
Face redness may be accompanied by other symptoms, depending on the condition that causes it. The main ones are an unhe althy appearance of the skin, acne, blisters, itchy skin, excessive sweating, a feeling of heat. Hyperemia may be accompanied by symptoms that originate in other body systems (eg, dizziness, diarrhea, restlessness, palpitations). This may be the result of another condition requiring treatment.
Facial flushing should be treated depending on what is causing it. So, instant reddening of the skin due to surging emotions does not require any therapy and isnormal state. You can cope with such redness by blowing with a fan or washing with cold water. At the same time, if the flushing of the face is associated with pressure and an acceleration of the heartbeat, measures must be taken to reduce the heart rate and keep the blood pressure at an optimal level.
If you experience flushing of the face, and you do not know its cause, contact a specialist for diagnosis. In rare cases, this may be a cancerous syndrome, as a tumor in the gastrointestinal tract or lungs can cause blood vessels to dilate.
