This type of medical activity, as therapeutic dentistry, is aimed at diagnosing, as well as treating those diseases that are associated with the periodontal tissues, the oral mucosa and the teeth directly. Its function also includes the development of new therapeutic, preventive, and diagnostic methods and the identification of any links between diseases of the internal organs and diseases of the teeth.
Tasks
Therapeutic dentistry has the following tasks:
- Detection, prevention and treatment of dental caries.
- Restoration of decayed teeth with modern filling materials.
- The so-called endodontic treatment. This is the treatment of those tissues that are located in the root canals and in the cavity of the tooth.
- Detection, prevention andtreatment of dental diseases that occur without caries.
- Treatment of diseases of the oral mucosa.
- Detection, prevention and treatment of diseases inherent in the periodontal tissues (this includes the periodontium).
Diagnosis in therapeutic dentistry
Therapeutic dentistry is actively engaged in diagnostics and, it is worth noting, there are different types of it in this activity. Doctors use cold and heat to determine tissue reactions. Using these techniques, it is possible to identify, for example, the differences between pulpitis, caries and periodontitis. By resorting to electroodontodiagnostics (abbreviated as EOD), it is possible to determine the sensitivity threshold of the periodontal and soft tissues, which subsequently helps to identify the presence or absence of their diseases.
Also, therapeutic dentistry conducts microbiological studies, thanks to which it turns out to clarify the nature of the lesion of the oral mucosa. Material is taken from the focus of inflammation and, examining it, they find the causative agent of the infection, as well as sensitivity to certain antibiotics.
Treatment methods
Practical restorative dentistry is rich in treatment methods that are used in it. The dentist-therapist is armed with a lot of such methods. For example, caries at the stain stage can be cured in various ways that restore the mineral composition of the enamel. One of the popular methods involves the introduction of fluorine and calcium into the tissues of the tooth using electrophoresis andapplications. For the treatment of deep stages, doctors perform the preparation of the so-called carious cavity, after which - filling. Dentists-therapists, using the most modern filling materials, not only fill, but also completely restore the appearance of teeth.
Dental Therapist Training
Recently, this speci alty is very popular. That is why the Department of Therapeutic Dentistry is widely known. It is available today in many medical universities. And, it is worth noting that this department is one of the leading universities in the methodological work. Graduates receive a decent education, with which they can get a really well-paid job.
