Quite often in the annotations to the drugs you can see a note that they should be used rectally. In addition, people often hear about rectal examinations. As surprising as it may sound, not everyone still knows what it means. However, not everyone dares to ask the sacramental question: “Rectally? Where is this? Well, let's dispel doubts about everything related to this definition!
What does that mean?
So, this term means only the fact that manipulations will be performed with the rectum through the anus (in other words, the anus). That's all, nothing complicated, scary or incomprehensible.
If drugs are prescribed rectally, where and how should they be administered?
Most often, candles are used in this way. They can be prescribed to lower the temperature, eliminate pain, treat various diseases (hemorrhoids, cancer). Such a drug should be injected into the anus. This is not so difficult to do, but many doubt how to properly administer the remedy rectally. This is where the pointed end of the candle should be directed, but how deep should it be inserted? First things first:
- First, you need to place the blister with the medicine in the refrigerator for a few minutes, because otherwise the candles will simply melt in your hands. You can simply hold the candle (in the package) under a stream of cool water.
- Immediately before the introduction of the product, you should wash your hands (thoroughly, with soap). You can wear gloves (medical).
- Open the package, take out the candle.
- To make the insertion as painless as possible, lubricate the pointed end of the candle with some kind of lubricant (no Vaseline).
- Then the one who is injected with a candle should lie on his side. The lower leg should be straightened, and the one on top should be pulled up to the stomach.
- The upper buttock should be raised, while the patient should relax. The candle is inserted into the anus to a depth of about 2.5-5 cm (for children - from 2.5 to 3 cm). It is convenient to do this with your index finger.
- As soon as the candle is inserted, the buttocks should be squeezed and lie still for about 5 minutes. As you can see, inserting the suppository rectally is pretty easy!
When else can you hear this definition?
Rectal exams are often prescribed. This is done by both surgeons and gynecologists. Knowing that such an examination is ahead, it is worthwhile to first clarify whether an enema is needed.
The temperature is measured periodically in this way. Sometimes it is much more expedient to perform such a manipulation rectally than in the traditional way (axillary). This is especially true in the treatment of children. True, you will need a special thermometer (frommercury models are highly recommended to be abandoned in favor of electronic or those that use tin).
The baby will need to be put on the tummy, the clothes covering the buttocks should be removed. To facilitate the procedure, you can put a pillow under the child's hips. The thermometer is inserted to a depth of about 2 cm. The duration of the measurement is no more than 5 minutes.
