What is the mysterious word "rehab"? In narrow circles, namely for those who have personally encountered alcoholism and drug addiction, this term is quite well-known. Therefore, do not be upset and even more embarrassed if this new word is not yet familiar.
Meaning
The word rehab comes from the English rehabilitation, abbreviated rehab, translated into Russian - "rehabilitation" I. It appeared in connection with unhappy tendencies. It is used to refer to rehabilitation centers for drug addicts and alcoholics. Less often, this is the name given to clinics for the rehabilitation of children with developmental disabilities and damage to the nervous system. Those who do not know English do not immediately associate the word with rehabilitation, since they sound somewhat different.
Origin of the word
Now it can be found in newspapers and magazines. After all, artists and other media personalities often face these diseases. And in the news you can often hear that another actress or singer went to rehab or simply to a rehabilitation center.
The word has already been firmly entrenched in the Russian language since the second half of the 2000s. Now it can also be found in the Russian-language press without quotes. This type of word formation is considered a neologism.
Neologisms
The Russian language, like any other, is a living organism. Some words are dying out because the concepts themselves are outdated, while some concepts have only just appeared and require some kind of name for them. Then the process of word formation is activated. Terms that have recently appeared in everyday life and are not yet familiar to everyone are called neologisms. The word is of Greek origin, it is translated like this - “new word”.
New terms are formed in several ways:
- attaching prefixes and/or suffixes;
- addition;
- transition from one part of speech to another;
- the formation of homonyms;
- fusion;
- borrowed from another language.
In the case of the word "rehab", this is a neologism formed by borrowing.
The essence of rehabilitation clinics
How can such rehabilitation centers be useful for alcoholics and drug addicts? How can these diseases be cured, and these are not bad habits, but diseases? Methods for treating addicts are different. But at the root they have common principles:
- belief a person that he is sick;
- cleansing the body with droppers and nutrition;
- directing energy in the right direction to keep a person busy;
- increased physical activity, because it produces endorphins;
- conversations with a psychologist;
- change of scenery;
- disconnect from gadgets and social media.
In addition to the most obvious addictions, rehab clinics also treat the following:

- social addiction;
- gambling;
- workaholism.
People ignorantly believe that addictions appear from idleness and whim. And also they do not understand what rehab is, believing that this is extortion of money from desperate relatives. And that if a person really wants, then he can find a useful thing, get distracted and give up an addiction. Yes, there is a grain of truth in this, this is possible, but only at the very initial stage of addiction formation.
They think about help when a person has already entered the stage of chemical dependence and he can no longer cope on his own. The extraction of a new dose becomes the main goal in life, which tightly overlaps all other needs. Even such valuable ones as love, children and parents. That is why drug addicts rob loved ones and do other terrible things. They regret it, but it's too late.
The first thing you want to do is turn away from such a person. But if a person is really dear, then they try to help him by placing him in a clinic, where he will be brainwashed, his body will be washed and he will be allowed to collect his thoughts. That's what rehab is.
Chemical addiction
Drugs are dangerous because, by stimulating the pleasure center in the brain, at first they give unearthly bliss, and over time, a person cannot live normally withoutthem. And in the most direct sense. And no strength of mind alone will help here.
A he althy person, in response to negative events in life, should produce substances that will cheer him up and help him cope with grief or stress on his own. But in patients with addiction, this metabolism is disturbed, and the substances themselves will not be developed. And only by taking a new dose of the drug, a person copes with such a difficult condition. In case of any trouble, the patient will be covered by a wave of despair, mental pain and suicidal thoughts. Until he takes his drug.
In more advanced stages, a person cannot simply exist normally and get out of bed without a new dose. The state of sobriety becomes unbearable for him, the whole body fails: chills, cold sweats, wild headaches appear, and the gastrointestinal tract refuses to work. That's when a person needs to literally be saved, otherwise he will die.
What is rehab? This is a way to rehabilitate metabolism and improve hormone production through medication, physical activity and psychological influence.
Both an ordinary cigarette and an injection of heroin can be considered a drug, but they carry different dangers. And if in the case of tobacco this will not happen soon, then in the case of hard drugs it is a matter of a couple of years.
There is a theory that there is a hereditary predisposition to chemical addictions. People with this predisposition have a reducedthe level of happiness hormones - serotonin and endorphin. They almost always feel miserable. And therefore they are especially sensitive to various artificial stimulants of happiness, since by nature such a feeling is rarely given to them. Therefore, a person who had alcoholics or drug addicts in his family should be doubly careful with these substances.
12 steps
The most famous program is the "12 steps". Despite the fact that it is aimed at treating chemical addiction, it works with the psyche. Its principle is that the patient must go through 12 stages, which look like this:
- Admit your dependence and defenselessness in front of her.
- Admit that you can't handle addiction on your own and need help.
- Let go of the situation and trust in higher powers, believe in the true course of events.
- Explore yourself, understand your strengths and weaknesses, without embellishing or scourging yourself.
- Realize your misconceptions about life.
- Prepare for decisive action and the fight against disease and filth.
- Accept your shortcomings, see how others have overcome them, and embark on your personal struggle.
- Make a list of people who have been harmed.
- Apologize to loved ones and make amends for all damage caused by drug intoxication.
- Go back to analyzing your judgments and views, looking back to see if they have changed enough.
- Work on your spiritual essence, recognize God in yourself.
- Achieving the goal and spiritual enlightenment,start helping others just starting the program.
Some consider this program a cult because it refers to religion. But the results and its popularity speak for themselves. This is a lot of healed souls. Thoughts can really heal, as the brain is capable of much.
Rehabs in Russia
They are in almost every major city. But what is rehab in Russia, and is it different from foreign ones? Most clinics in Russia use proven and tested methods. That is, they simply copy foreign counterparts. The advantage is that for patients it turns out much cheaper and does not need to go anywhere. But some rehabs also develop their own methods.
Rehabilitation centers for alcoholics and drug addicts are located most often in a forest area, far from civilization. Fortunately, there are enough such places in Russia. They also guarantee anonymity and are responsible for their patients. They have all the conditions for living. If a person refuses help, then in the clinic he is persuaded to do so. There is also a compulsory rehabilitation service. Still, they try to avoid the word “treatment”, it’s not for nothing that the translation of rehab is precisely “rehabilitation”.
Be that as it may, the body of such a person will never be the same. And this means that there can be no complete cure for this disease. A drug addict once will always be weak in relation to chemical stimulants of happiness. And it is quite possible that these rehabilitations after breakdowns inhis life will be several.
