The invention of this great scientist overtook the achievements of medicine by several decades. Gavriil Abramovich Ilizarov was born in 1921 into a peasant family. He graduated from high school externally and entered the medical institute. Since 1944, Ilizarov has been working as a rural doctor in the Kurgan region. Even at that time, he was interested in the problem of bone tissue regeneration after fractures. And in 1951, during a trip to the patient on a cart, he came up with a way to splice bones using the originaldesigns. He created a prototype of his device from improvised materials - a handle from a shovel and bicycle knitting needles.
His invention was patented in 1954, and in 1966 on the basis of the 2nd city hospital of the city of Kurgan a laboratory was established to study the problems of transosseous osteosynthesis. In 1968, Ilizarov received his Ph. D. Thanks to the achievements of the laboratory in accelerating bone tissue regeneration, the Kurgan Research Institute of Experimental Orthopedics and Traumatology was established in 1971.
Academician G. A. Ilizarov became the head of the center. He was an extraordinary personality, his discoveries helped many people and gave impetus to the development of orthopedics and traumatology. Ilizarov was awarded several medals and prizes, three Orders of Lenin. His inventions are known all over the world.
History of the center
The Ilizarov Center in Kurgan has been operating since 1972. It was founded on the basis of an experimental laboratory that studied the possibilities of percutaneous osteosynthesis. This center includes a research institute and a clinic. In 1983 he was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor, and in 1993 he was named after Academician Ilizarov.

Ilizarov method
G. A. Ilizarov (the center, as mentioned above, bears his name) proposed a unique method for the treatment of fractures and pathologies of the musculoskeletal system using the compression-distraction apparatus he created. It was based on the properties of bone tissue to respond to a slight stretch by building and regenerating. This method of controlled bone growth is used to treat the consequences of injuries and correct various deformities of the musculoskeletal system.
Initially, this method was used to heal fractures. Then G. A. Ilizarov noticed that in the place of fusion, the formation of a new bone tissue begins. A feature of the method is the use of a unique apparatus in the form of two or more steel rings connected by rods. Pins pass through them and the damaged bone, which allow fixing the bone in the position necessary for fusion. The device provides the ability to change the position of the rings, slightly stretching the bone. This ensures its growth.

Kurgan is a small regional center in the Ural Federal District.
