What is the Valsalva maneuver? The process by which purposeful exhalation occurs. The mouth and nasal passages are closed so that the necessary tension of the abdominal muscle and chest cavity occurs. This method is named after the well-known Italian anatomist. But what is the purpose of this procedure, known today as the Valsalva maneuver?

Using this method, you can effectively expel pus, for example, from the ear cavity with purulent processes common today in many people. No wonder this process is often called Valsalva tension.

Often this procedure is performed, for example, by divers when diving to depth, as well as aircraft passengers during takeoff and landing. This helps regulate pressure in both the maxillary sinus and middle ear area.

How to carry out such a procedure? The Valsalva maneuver consists in taking a full exhalation and a deep breath with the whole chest. Next, the patient should make another strong exhalation and briefly hold the breath. During all this time, a careful recording of the electrocardiogram is carried out, as well as a mandatoryregistration of diastolic, systolic blood pressure.

There are several variants of this test. In one option, the patient lies on his back. For about 15 seconds, you need to exhale into a special tube connected to a pressure gauge, which creates the necessary pressure in the system (approximately 40 mmHg).

Includes the Valsalva test in a few basic physiological steps. Age, position of the body in space, gender, pressure created during deep exhalation, and the regular use of certain medications can affect the result of the study.

It is not uncommon for people with a hereditary predisposition to connective tissue diseases to have aneurysms. It is not uncommon to notice a coronary right affected sinus of Valsalva. The gap often occurs in young people or even children.

If a similar (above described) method is carried out, then the air retention that occurs in the lungs creates a lot of pressure. And such a high pressure in the chest and abdominal cavity limits the return of the necessary venous blood to the heart. This, in turn, can lead to the fact that the amount of blood ejected by the heart into the vessels is sharply reduced. From all of the above, we can conclude that people who suffer from such cardiovascular pathologies are strictly forbidden to practice this procedure, especially without medical supervision.

You can sum up a little. As you can see, Valsalva maneuvers are used for a specific purpose, andnamely: to assess what is the probability of a sudden death in the case of a heart attack, by conducting a special test. In this case, the heart rate is measured, the rhythm variability is assessed. If the result is low, then the risk of sudden death is very high.
