On the territory of present-day Karelia, pediatrics was not developed at the beginning of the 20th century. This is evidenced by the lack of children's hospitals and specialists at that time. Provision of medical care was carried out by zemstvo doctors consisting of 24 people. The 13 small hospitals, with a total of 637 beds, did not have separate children's wards or departments.
The history of the origin and development of pediatrics in Karelia
Since 1927, the first advisory centers began to open. At the same time, infectious and somatic departments were created, which were part of urban and rural hospitals. In the early 1930s, the first children's kitchens were organized in Karelia. Since that time, pediatricians have also begun to work. The ambulatory service developed rapidly. In 1945–1967, independentchildren's hospitals. They were located in adapted premises and consisted of 80–125 seats. It should be said that during this period there was a rather high infant mortality rate in the republic. The administration tried to do everything possible to correct the situation. So, the Council of Ministers of the KASSR in 1963 decided to create a multidisciplinary large medical institution. This is how the Children's Republican Hospital of Petrozavodsk began its existence. It was then designed for 100 people. The Republican Children's Hospital of Petrozavodsk was located in the administrative building at 33 Frunze Street. Valentina Alexandrovna Borisova, an honored doctor not only of Karelia, but also of Russia, was appointed head of the medical institution.
Modern DRB
At present, the Republican Children's Hospital of Petrozavodsk is a multidisciplinary, multifunctional hospital of wide specialization. The institution can accept 400 people at the same time today. The Polyclinic of the Children's Republican Hospital (Petrozavodsk) receives 300 patients per shift. The hospital provides planned and emergency medical care to patients from birth to 18 years of age. Children with acute somatic and surgical diseases and injuries are brought to the hospital around the clock.
Activities
The polyclinic, which is part of a medical institution, simultaneously provides advisory assistance to children in the regions of Karelia. Children's Republican Hospital (Petrozavodsk) is the base for the Departments of Surgery and Pediatrics, which are part of the Faculty of Medicine of PetrSU. They, together with specialized departments, carry out work aimed at training highly qualified personnel. Medical staff
146 doctors operate in the hospital, 66% of which have the highest qualification category. 15 employees have the honorary title "Honored Doctor of the Republic of Karelia". 8 candidates of medical sciences work here. The middle level includes 338 people, 84 of them have the highest qualifications in their speci alty. The Republican Children's Hospital of Petrozavodsk actively cooperates with medical institutions in Finland, Germany, and the USA. In addition, seminars are regularly held, training of personnel is actively conducted at the workplace. In 2005, the Children's Republican Hospital of Petrozavodsk was recognized as the best institution. For this, the hospital was awarded a diploma of the Government of Karelia. The institution was also awarded a diploma from the Association of Russian Children's Clinics for providing specialized care in the hospital mode.
CRH Centers
In January 2006, a republican neonatal complex was founded in the hospital. Here, care is provided for newborns belonging to a high-risk group. In a specialized institution, they receive state-of-the-art rehabilitation treatment, intensive care and qualified follow-up care. This is one of the largest departments of all, which includes the Republican Children's Hospital (Petrozavodsk). The Allergy Center on the basis of the hospital provides planned and emergency care. The department accepts patients with pulmonological pathology. In January 2010, the center for disorders of the pelvic organs began to function. It treats children with pathology of the rectum and colon, inflammatory disorders of the genital organs, juvenile bleeding, malformations and diseases of the urinary tract.

The polyclinic is a large structural unit of the DRB and performs two tasks:
- Provides primary he alth care to children in the Drevlyanka microdistrict.
- Provides specialized advisory and diagnostic assistance to children in 24 areas.
The service areas include the Universitetsky Gorodok district, the Drevlyanka microdistrict, as well as part of the Perevalka district, which is adjacent to the hospital buildings.
Structure
