Everyone knows what the Hippocratic Oath is. This is a promise that a medical professional makes at the time of receiving an education. He swears to observe a certain list of norms of medical ethics. However, not everyone knows that in addition to the oath, there is also a Hippocratic hat. What is it, why is it needed, and where did this concept come from?
What is this?
Since ancient times, people have used various methods of dressing wounds and stopping bleeding. In India, wounds were bandaged with silk soaked in oil, in ancient Egypt they used canvas soaked in resin, in ancient Rome - leather belts. In ancient Greece, many different ways of dressing wounds were invented, some of which are still used today.
One of these ways is just the imposition of a bandage "Hippocratic Hat". It is a special rotating headband. It is applied in cases of open wounds or burns of the crown, as well as after craniotomy. To apply the Cap of Hippocrates, both a double-headed bandage and two connected bandages are used, about ten centimeters wide.
To do this rightbandage, you need to unwind two bandages by about fifteen centimeters and place the end of the first on the end of the second. You will also need scissors to cut off unnecessary bandage residues when the bandage is completed.
How to make a Hippocratic hat
Applying a bandage in this way is carried out in several stages:
- It is necessary to seat the victim facing the person applying the bandage. The assisting person must pick up a double-headed bandage (one head in each hand).
- Apply a bandage to the occipital region and pull the heads to the forehead. Particular attention should be paid to the fact that the starting locking turn is performed below the level of the occiput.
- Bend the dressing and pull both skeins of the bandage to the back of the head.
- Bend the bandage again and move the skeins so that the left one is in the right hand and the right one in the left. Stretch the bandage in the left hand in the direction from the crown of the head to the forehead. From the right - make several turns around the head.
- Punch again. Next, you need to hold a bandage in your right hand through the crown to the back of the head. In the left hand - turning the head.
- Move skeins of bandage from left hand to right and vice versa. Continue bandaging until the crown is completely closed.
- In order for the "Hippocratic Hat" bandage to hold tight, you need to make sure that the tours are located under the frontal tubercles.
- Fix the bandage from the left hand on the back of the head, in the right hand - perform the last, fixing turn around the head.
- Tie the bandages in a knot, cut off unnecessary parts.
Before you start applying the dressing, be sure to wash your hands. It is best to perform it with sterile rubber gloves to minimize the risk of infection.
After the bandage is applied, be sure to check whether it covers the injured areas of the head securely enough.
Origin of the name
The well-known ancient Greek physician and philosopher Hippocrates had a whole treatise devoted to various methods of dressing wounds. It was he who developed the method of dressing described above. For this reason, the headband bears his name.
