Proctitis is a disease of the rectal mucosa. It is divided into acute form and chronic.
Acute proctitis: symptoms
The acute form of the disease affects the mucosa superficially for several hours or days. In turn, acute proctitis is divided into:
- catarrhal-purulent, when the rectal mucosa is covered with pus;
- catarrhal-hemorrhagic, when there is a hemorrhage in the mucosa;
- erosive, when ulcers develop on the mucosa;
- polypous, when polyps form on it.
Chronic proctitis has symptoms in the form of deep mucosal lesions. Its development takes a long time, up to several months. In turn, the chronic form is divided into:
- hypertrophic, when the folds on the mucosa are thickened and look too loose;
- atrophic when, on the contrary, they are smooth and the shell is very thin.
Reasons for appearance
The main causes of the disease are:
- Meals that often include spicy, canned, smoked foods and alcohol.
- Frequent constipation with venous congestion.
- Diseases of internal organs, rectal organs,hypothermia.
- Infection with parasites: dysenteric amoeba, trichomonas, balantidia.
Proctitis symptoms
An important sign of the presence of the disease is pain in the rectum. It may be accompanied by bloody or purulent discharge. During bowel movements, the pain intensifies. An increase in body temperature accompanies acute proctitis. Accompanying the progress of the disease are chills, false urge to go to the toilet, heaviness and burning in the rectum. Proctitis has symptoms of an additional nature, such as diarrhea or, conversely, constipation, pain in the perineum, radiating to the lower back or to the genitals. The acute form of the disease is more severe than other types, but less common.
Ulcerative proctitis has slightly different symptoms. For example, blood in the feces is characteristic of this particular form of the disease. The blood may be in the form of clots or just a bright color. There are no disturbances in the work of the intestines. The radiation form of ulcerative proctitis is characterized by discharge of blood from the rectum, heaviness appears, a feeling of pressure in the intestine, the urge to go to the toilet becomes frequent. Chronic proctitis has symptoms in the form of itching or burning in the anus, pain in the rectal area, characterized by mucus during defecation, frequent constipation.
